They are popular and typical fiestas; Ponferrada celebrates its most traditional fiestas during the first days of September.
On the 8th of September, the day of the Virgin of La Encina, saint patron of El Bierzo, thousands of people from everywhere go to the Basilica of La Encina in order to give their offerings to the Virgin.
The celebrations that usually last for ten days flood the town with popular music, exhibitions of handicrafts, gastronomy, concerts, theatre in the street and fireworks.
The Council Department that organizes the Fiestas take care of providing the people with a different range of activities so that everybody can enjoy and take part in the celebrations.
This way the children have several workshops and leisure activities where they can participate actively in CIMA Ciudad Mágica (Magic City) in the El Temple park. On the 9th of September "la Encinina", a local fiesta of Ponferrada is celebrated.
